Summer is in full swing. It brings hot days, cold drinks, and lots of sun.
Another thing that summer brings is great entertainment.
Summer in Toronto, with its festivals, sports and cultural events, is the perfect time to connect with your clients in a more casual setting.
Bringing your business guests to one of the area’s best events is a great way to show your appreciation while developing the client relationship at the same time.
But where to take them?
Business development is an art: the art of establishing and maintaining relationships. A big part of building business relationships is learning about what your client is like as an individual.
If you can remember, for example, that Stu likes local theatre, taking Stu to a new production at Soulpepper will be more impactful than if you take him to a Jay’s game. Since you’ve paid attention to details about Stu’s interests, Stu will know that you’ll pay attention to details about his business and that your relationship is a priority.
So, divided for you by interest, here are the best events in and around Toronto to take your business guests to this summer:
For the Sports Fan
1. RBC Canadian Open (July 24–30)
This PGA event will be held at the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario and will give golf enthusiasts a chance to see some of the world’s best golfers in action.
The Canadian Open is one of Canada’s most historic sporting events. It has been played annually since 1904, except during WWI and WWII, and is the third oldest running tournament in the PGA Tour.
If your client is at all a fan of golf, they would appreciate nothing more than being taken to this event. Plus, the time spent walking between holes is the perfect chance to talk business (just make sure to pause when those “Quiet Please” signs are raised!).
2. Rogers Cup (August 5–13)
The Rogers Cup is consistently one of Toronto’s most anticipated sporting events, and for good reason. Tennis’ top athletes gather to battle it out and see who will reign supreme in this singles elimination tournament.
Another historical Canadian sporting event, with only Wimbledon and the US Open having longer histories, this year’s tournament marks the 125th anniversary of the women’s event, which will be held in Toronto (the men’s event is being held in Montreal).
This tournament is the perfect match for any sports fan client. Taking them to see 30 of the Top 35 women players in the world, including the number 1 world ranking Angelique Kerber and fan favourite Venus Williams, is definitely a way for you to score points off the court.
For the Theatre Buff
3. Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (June 27–September 3)
The Toronto theatre scene offers a lot to choose from, so it can be hard to pick which production a client might like to see. If your theatre buff client is musically inclined, look no further. Playing at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical has been garnering rave reviews.
Canadian Chilina Kennedy plays the lead in this production based on the true story of Carole King’s journey to become a music legend. With its Tony, Grammy and Academy award winning team, your musical theatre buff client undoubtedly has tickets to this show on their wish list. Check it off for them and enjoy a night watching memorable Canadian talent together.
4. Confederation Part I: Confederation & Riel (June 9–August 19)
Soulpepper and VideoCabaret present this tragi-comedy in four one-act plays set in two parts. Part I shows the backroom deal-making Sir John A. Macdonald undertook to make confederation happen and his showdown with Louis Riel.
This play has been called an educational and entertaining antidote to sappy Canada Day 150 celebrations. If this sounds like something your theatre buff client might enjoy, make sure to book your tickets soon.
An added bonus? After your client tells you they loved it, you can invite them to see Confederation Part II: Scandal & Rebellion.
For the Music Lover
5. Lionel Richie with Mariah Carey (August 24)
These two powerhouse, multiple Grammy Award winning performers will come together at the Air Canada Centre for one night only this August.
Richie, one of the best selling artists of all time, and Carey, the artist responsible for the longest running number one song in US history, are two performers that any fan of R&B, soul, pop, or just good music wouldn’t want to miss.
Score some tickets to this event and bring your music loving client along to see Richie and the elusive chanteuse herself.
Note that you may want to take a client with whom you already have a close relationship as neither of you will be able to stop yourselves from singing along with these artists’ hits.
6. Depeche Mode (September 3)
If electronic music is more in line with your music loving client’s tastes than soulful tunes, tickets to Depeche Mode’s Global Spirit Tour may be just the thing that they’d appreciate.
Depeche Mode will be performing at the Air Canada Centre for one night this September. Listed as one of VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time, this pioneering band has had ten top 10 albums on the UK charts and numerous chart topping singles.
Like with our number 5 pick, consider taking those clients you know well to this concert.
Picking an activity to take your clients to for business development purposes can seem daunting, but if you stick to events that fall within your client’s area of interest, you can be sure that they’ll appreciate the thought and effort.
