For most of his professional career as an investment banker and securities broker, Wayne Groom thrived on the adrenaline, excitement and fast-paced energy of a brokerage trading room filled with up to several hundred noisy colleagues at any one time.
So when he founded Tellico Group and struck out on his own in 2009, he looked for an office that would continue to provide a well-appointed professional environment for his fledgling securities trading and compliance advisory business. He also wanted a nurturing, thriving, and community-focused place to work.
And Wayne found it – after several attempts at other corporate office locations around Toronto (“perfectly functional, but nothing exciting”) – at iQ’s historic Dineen Building on Yonge Street, in the heart of Toronto’s financial district.
“Toronto’s financial community is in a very small footprint within the city, and it’s critical for me to be within that footprint,” says Groom, who also serves as the country manager for a leading compliance technology service.
“Clients love coming here”
“What iQ gives me is the personal attention, and a very unique environment,” he says. “It’s a very historic building that has been beautifully renovated. The lounge is a really unique space where I host an annual client event with 40 people from all the large brokers in Canada and U.S. dealers who have representation here, and the managers here look after every detail – including the catering and event set-up. It’s a fun place to be, and clients love coming here.”
Groom also values other core amenities that he didn’t find at any other corporate office locations. Among them, excellent dining at a Dineen Building rooftop restaurant called The Chase, and washrooms with shower facilities. He works out at a gym nearby, walks back to work and can shower before diving into the day – or night’s work.
Groom encourages other independent business professionals to find a work space that makes work more enjoyable, fun and fulfilling.
“I’m much more effective in an office environment than I am at home,” Groom acknowledges. “What you don’t realize until you’re in a space is the value of the community. I’ve actually done business with my neighbors here in iQ – mortgage brokers across the hall when I was buying a property, a naturopath around the corner who had been a great resource. In an office space like this, you end up making connections with people in other offices. In some of the other locations I was in, it felt stiff, like you’re underdressed if you’re not wearing a suit. At iQ, there’s a level of camaraderie with a great mix of professionalism that is hard to find elsewhere. Ultimately, I want to enjoy coming to work every day – and I’ve found that here.”
