Created by Ryan Holmes in 2008, HootSuite is a social media management system for businesses to execute marketing campaigns across social networks. One dashboard integrates Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google + and the like so that organizations can consolidate their multiple social media accounts. Run out of Vancouver, HootSuite has 6 million users and is valued at a whopping $3 billion.
The world’s largest online dating site, with over 45 million users, began as a small startup ran out of founder Markus Frind’s apartment in 2003. POF blew up on the strength of being the first free online dating service and the company prides itself on innovating change and taking risks. With the online dating business shifting to mobile, POF has developed apps for android and iPhone and now over 70% of users log in from smart phones. Employing 66 people in downtown Vancouver, POF earns a revenue of $15 million per year.
This Calgary-based analytics website was founded and self-funded by Canadians Bart Bobrowski and Chris Shannon in 2007. Whos.amung.us offers users both a free and Pro version of the program, which gathers the best and most innovative traffic stats for websites. The program gives blogs and websites more comprehensive analytics than they can find on Google or their own dashboard and the business is now worth over $770 million.
Co-founded by Oleg Gutsol and Evgeny Tchebotarev in 2009, 500px is an online photography community that hosts over 6 million photos. The site is aimed towards aspiring and professional photographers, as it offers a place to gain exposure and connect with other photographers. Using an algorithm that compiles views, votes, favourites and dislikes, 500px promotes the highest quality photos so that they are more visible on the site. The company’s Alexa rank is 1,434 and is valued at over $580 million.
This e-Commerce platform was launched out of Ottawa in 2006 by Tobias Lutke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake. Shopify enables individuals and businesses to create online stores and now hosts over 50,000 online retailers, including Gatorade, Amnesty International, General Electric and Tesla Motors. The three founders initially set out to sell snowboard equipment online in 2004 but after being disgusted by the quality of online store software packages, Lutke, a programmer, decided to design his own. Shopify has been profiled in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Mashable and is worth approximately $511 million.
